Bafana Bafana restored some dignity and pride by thrashing Namibia in the COSAFA Cup plate semi-final on Tuesday evening. The South African side never looked like losing the match and ended up convincing winners with a score line of 4-1.
The team suffered a shock 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to Madagascar in the quarter-final of the main competition on Sunday afternoon.
Bafana Bafana will face Botswana in the COSAFA Cup plate final which takes place on Friday. The team will be looking to build on their momentum and nothing less than a win will be accepted by their weary supporters.
Briefly.co.za gathered that Bafana opened their account against Namibia courtesy of an Aubrey Modiba penalty in the 25th minute of the match.
Lebogang Maboe doubled the hosts lead just three minutes later as he broke through the Namibian defensive line.
The visitors hit back with a goal of their own in the 39th minute, three minutes later, Maboe once again scored to take the lead to 3-1.
KickOff.co.za reported that the score remained unchanged until South Africa scored in the 53rd minute of the match through a well-executed shot from Captain Siyanda Xulu.
Bafana created a couple of half chances after that, but worryingly did not manage to convert any of those chances into goals.
Maboe said after the match he was happy with his own and the team’s performance and was proud of how the players bounced back after the disappointing defeat on Sunday.
Maboe was named man of the match.
Earlier in the week, Baxter defended his policy of allowing youngsters to gain international experience. Baxter said he still believes in the Bafana project, which is squarely aimed at building a team for the future.
