- The Sarafina Stadium was supposed to be improved and have facilities added to the grounds
- The only construction that can be showed after years of construction in one toilet
- A committee will now look into the project to find out what happened to the millions invested in it
The Sarafina Stadium and sports grounds in Ikgageng in the North West looks far from the modern facilities it was planned to be, years after the project was started.
A provincial committee has assembled and looked into the project because of the lack of any of the planned development, except for the one toilet that was built.
During a meeting mayor Kgotso Khumalo has admitted that several service providers were paid a total amount of more than R30 million, but the Sarafina Stadium is still an incomplete project.
This committee has now given order to the JB Marks municipality to investigate the project and find out what exactly happened to the money that was pushed into it.
Benji Zungu, the technical director at the municipality, stated that the project was supposed to upgrade the stadium and add facilities like tennis courts, a swimming pool, netball courts and a ablution block among many other similar plans.
According to The Citizen there will be an investigation into the incomplete roads around the Sarafina stadium, payments that were made with no results to speak of, and the project in general.
Briefly.co.za gathered that an amount of more than R45 million has been spent on the project in total, but very little has been done to improve the stadium.
According to the committee's chairperson Motlalepula Rosho, it was discovered that the Sarafina Stadium project was not even close to completion.
Furthermore, the facilities that should have been built are nowhere to be found.
The initial construction companies' contracts were ended because of the lack of progress and the companies were paid an amount of R9 million.
Another construction company was hired and finished their work in 2017 and was paid about R17 million.
Members of the committee want the investigation to also look into what they call "ghost payments".
No one knows when the upgrade of the Sarafina Stadium and its facilities will be finished and how much it will cost in the end.
