OR Tambo custom officers turn down R400k bribe from passenger

A passenger destined for Dubai raised the suspicions of the customs officers at OR Tambo airport and was removed from his flight for questioning.

While being escorted to the questioning area the passenger repeatedly offered the officials a bribe of $30 000 (R390 000). He has was flagged by security when he checked in for his flight with no luggage save for one heavy backpack.

The customs officers repeatedly refused to accept the "bundles of currency" the passenger offered them. Once he was confronted by the customs manager he again tried to bribe the officers.

Upon searching his bag the customs officers discovered $334 895 (almost R4-million). The search was captured on CCTV cameras.

A case has been opened with the SAPS for attempted bribery, failure to declare and false declaration. The passenger has been taken into custody.

Another passenger was stopped on the same day heading for Dubai with approximately R600 000 in US dollars and Pakistani Rupees in his laptop bag.

He was also taken into custody and charged with failure to declare.
