A tweet about the amount difference between the winnings of the comrades’ champion and Miss South African sparked a debate on Twitter.
A tweep, going by the handle @ramoroaswi, posted about the huge difference in the winnings of Miss SA and the Comrades marathon on Sunday.
According to @ramoroaswi, the Miss SA winner received R3 million to just “smile”, while the Comrades winner ran 90km to win just R440 000.
“90KM over 6hours,count the preparation and corporate SA can only give the winner R440k?Miss SA gets over R3Million for just smiling?#Comrades2018 #comradesmarathon”, the tweet read.
The post received a ton of reactions and in true tweep style, social media users applied the idea behind the tweet to other issues.
Briefly.co.za gathered one tweep pointed out @ramoroaswi was moaning about the R3 million Miss SA winnings when the government wanted to use R200 million to change the name of an airport.
Another tweep pointed out to @ramoroaswi that the Comrades is about having fun, not the money. Besides, the Miss South Africa winner has a lot of responsibilities following the pageant, which include charity work, travelling, etc.
“Comrades Marathon is about fun and healthy living style so money comes as a bonus to that. You can choose not to participate end of story. Only ten people get compensated and thousands cross the line expecting nothing”, Sizwe Fono wrote.
