In 2017, Gwala shocked fans when he announced he would be taking a break from broadcasting to focus on his fight against colon cancer, which Briefly.co.za learned was already in an advanced stage.

TimesLIVE reported the radio host said the cancer came as shock to him as well, adding he was not ready to die.

South Africans have since his announcement supported him during the difficult times, and Tlhabi's update on his health was welcomed by tweeps.

"I saw Gwala recently. He is his usual self. Previous op went VERY well. But remember it's not a sprint but an ultramarathon..there are a few more steps ahead. But I promise you...Xolani is exceeding all expectations. My darling friend is still standing. That IS significant", she captioned her post.
