- Julen Lopetegui has expressed sadness after being sacked as Spain coach
- The 51-year-old was axed after accepting to replace Zidane at Real Madrid
- He has been replaced by former Real Madrid star Hierro
Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui has admitted that he was sad to have been sacked by the Spanish Football Federation as Spain coach.
On Wednesday, June 13, the Spanish Football Federation chiefs announced the exit of the 51-year-old manager claiming he should not have accepted Real Madrid job while handling the Spain team.
Julen was due to take charge of Spain's opening World Cup clash against Portugal on Friday, June 15, but Fernando Hierro will now be in the dugout.
''Very sad because we have a magnificent team and hopefully win the World Cup,'' Lopetegui said according to Mirror UK.
Meanwhile, he has left Moscow heading to Madrid where he is expected to be unveiled by Real Madrid chiefs.
Earlier, NAIJ.com had reported how Spain named Hierro as their interim manager during their campaign at the 2018 FIFA World Cup which will start on Thursday, June 14, in Russia.
His appointment comes just an hour after the Spanish Football Federation announced the exit of Julen Lopetegui who is now the manager of Real Madrid.
Lopetegui's decision to have accepted Real Madrid job masterminded the rationale for him to have been axed by the Spanish Football Federation chiefs.
