Meeting someone on social media is always risky- a person can easily pretend to be something they’re not.
And, a Tzaneen woman learned this the hard way. The Mbekwana village resident met a man, who called himself Brian Mabasa, on Facebook.
According to the victim, they hit it off immediately and after three months of having conversations online, they decided to meet in person.
She was excited to meet Mabasa, who allegedly worked at a Hospital in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. The met up and spent the weekend together, Dailysun.co.za reported.
Briefly.co.za learned on the Sunday, the couple drove in her Toyota Tazz to a shopping centre in Tzaneen’s CBD.
“On arrival at the shopping centre, the victim went to a pharmacy, leaving the suspect with the car at a parking lot.”, it was reported.
However, when she came out, her lover was nowhere to be seen, nor was her car in the parking lot.
“The victim then, immediately reported the matter to the police who started with their initial investigations,” Police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said.
Ngoepe urged other people to learn from the story and to avoid starting relationships with people they met online.
