Belinda Mapongwana overcame her difficult upbringing in Gugulethu township, Cape Town, to establish her own boutique law firm based in Sandton, Johannesburg.
According to Sowetan Live, Belinda knew at a young age that she wanted to become a lawyer to help tackle the injustices around her.
She couldn't study law at first and had to opt for fashion design, Briefly.co.za learned. However, she never gave up on her passion and went back to university to study law.
The high-powered attorney subsequently won a scholarship for her Master of Law in International Business Law at Vrije University in the Netherlands.
Belinda's experience includes working at the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva and as Vice President at Absa Capital Compliance.
She eventually founded Mapongwana Attorneys, which provides affordable legal solutions for businesses.
Speaking to Sowetan Live, Belinda explained her motivation for starting her firm:
I wanted to provide legal services to small, micro and medium enterprises that could not afford the rates charged by the big firms.
She also mentors young attorneys in a bid to give them a better chance of succeeding in the competitive corporate world.
