Social media users reacted to a viral video, which showed a desperate mom stealing food and baby formula to feed her family.
Times are tough and with millions of South Africans being unemployed and below the poverty line, some resort to desperate measures.
Parody Twitter account Man's Not Barry Roux posted a video on his social media account, which showed a woman trying to steal in order to feed her family.
The video was simply captioned, "Hunger is driving our people to the edge.".
Although stealing can not be condoned, tweeps felt sorry for the mother, who had done everything in her power to support her family, even if it meant commiting a crime.
"This is a very very sad situation. The fact that it is baby milk breaks one's heart", Christo Thurston wrote, adding "the shoplifting is 1 matter BUT to record the lady and then spread the video on social media intends to humiliate her. Moreover this video is testimony of the struggle and pain that people endure".
However, there were social media users who felt that there is no justifiable reason for someone to steal, not even poverty.
