Shocking photos and video footage circulated on social media, which showed the horrific conditions a lot of taxis were in.
Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has turned his attention to un-roadworthy, illegal and unlicensed vehicles that travel the streets of his city.
Mashaba took to social media to share photos of the condition some public transport vehicles are in and social media users could not believe their eyes.
"This press conference we just held highlights #JoburgRoadSafety We must keep motorist safe on out roads. #BuyaMthetho", he captioned the pics.
The pics received a lot of reactions from tweeps, who added it was disrespectful to passengers that the taxis were in such a bad condition.
Mashaba then posted a video of a taxi that allegedly transported kids to school just a week before it was impounded.
The mayor could not even open the door, which led to a tweep giving a hilarious tutorial on how to open a taxi door.
Mashaba held a press conference on Tuesday, a day after taxi drivers partook in a strike to protest the City impounding their vehicles, eNCA reported.
“This kind of intimidation and reckless behaviour conducted by individuals who do not want to adhere to the rule of law, will not be tolerated,” said Mashaba.
Briefly.co.za learned thus far over 500 vehicles have been impounded, where of only 70 are taxis.
