Despite turning 90 in a couple of months, IFP leader Inkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi does not take kindly to being called madala.
Buthelezi lost it during the land summit in Durban on Wednesday after the programme director, Inkosi Moshe Mabe, suggested he was an old man.
Mabe wanted to lighten the mood when he introduced Co-operative Governance Minister Zweli Mkhize, but his remark was taken up the wrong way by Buthelezi.
According to Daily News, Mabe told Mkhize things were not looking great since even the “madalas” showed up.
Mabe shot a glance at Buthelezi when he made the comment and the IFP leader blew his top.
“Look here! I may be older than your father, but you can’t call me a madala. You can’t make me a joke here”, Buthelezi fired back.
Briefly.co.za learned Mabe was visibly disappointed that his attempt to lighten the mood had gone so wrong, and to top it off Buthelezi apparently did not let it slide, he continued to complain.
According to other members from the Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders, they were embarrassed by his behavior since everyone knew Mabe did not mean it in an offensive manner.
