A 27-year-old Nigerian graduate and fashion designer is appealing for help from well-wishers to raise $35,000 (around R480,000) for cancer treatment.

Briefly.co.za gathered that a Twitter user, Kate Orok, shared Nengi Rachel Fubara's appeal on the social media platform recently.

She accompanied her posts with photos of Nengi, one of which showed how much her right leg has swollen as a result of a cancerous tumour around the groin area.

Nengi developed the tumour soon after graduating with a degree in Genetics and Biotechnology from the University of Calabar, Nigeria.

Although early tests didn't establish that the tumour was cancerous, a biopsy two years later revealed that it was.

Nengi and her family therefore need to raise the funds to travel to India for further treatment. They are fundraising under the "Save Nengi From Cancer" campaign.

They have also set up a fundraising page on GoFundMe.com, which can be found on this link.

Writing on her GoFundMe page, Nengi said:

Like most of us, I have goals and dreams, one of which is to further my education by obtaining a Masters degree and kick-start my clothing design & making business. However, all of these dreams have been put on hold to be whole again.

Twitter users and other well-wishers are responding to Nengi's appeal. According to her GoFundMe page, she has already raised $7,000 so far.
