An 80-year-old lady proved that her adventurous spirit is still intact by driving 12,000km from Cape Town to London, England, to visit her daughter.

Julia Albu has just completed her incredible journey that took her through the eastern parts of Africa, Briefly.co.za learned.

She spent a full year on the road in her 20-year-old Toyota Conquest. All the while, she documented her journey on her blog, www.myafricanconquest.com, and its Facebook page.

According to Daily Voice, Julia first got the idea while listening to a radio talk show. It focused on a well-known personality spending extravagant amounts of money on cars for his wives.

Julia explained:

I was incensed about this expense and thought it was ridiculous. So I called the station and told them that I was 80 years old and that my Toyota was 20 years old.
We’re a combined age of 100 and we’re both 100% – so much so that I’m going to drive it to London to see my daughter.

With help from sponsors, including Toyota’s "Start Your Impossible" initiative, Julia embarked on her epic road trip in mid-2017. Well-wishers accommodated her along the way.

Amazingly, her car, which she nicknamed "Tracy," never broke down. Its suspension was raised to help it cope with Africa's rugged terrains.

After numerous adventures and acquaintances along the way, Julia finally arrived in London towards the end of June this year.

Incredibly, Julia does not plan to take the easy way back to South Africa. She said she will drive back:

I’ve bought lots of lovely treats and goodies to share along the way, and I’ve got a huge list of people – family and others – who want to take turns in driving with me.

Her only regret is not being able to meet the Queen, because she's reportedly too busy during the English summer.
