- Brighton Hove and Albion have reportedly tabled a final offer of R50 million to secure the services of Percy Tau
- Mamelodi Sundowns are set to accept the offer which could net the club as much as R65 million after all the add-ons are included
- The offer shatters the previous record transfer amount of R24.5 million
Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly set to accept a record-breaking (and final take it or leave it) R50 million transfer deal from English Premier League club Brighton Hove and Albion for the services of star striker Percy Tau.
The deal could net Sundowns as much as R65 million once add-ons and performance clauses are taken into account. The deal will easily obliterate the current record of R24.5 million which was set when Thulani Serero transferred to Ajax Amsterdam.
Tau recently made the headlines when he refused to take part in pre-season training in an apparent attempt to force the club’s management to accept a previous offer from the same club. This led to a somewhat ugly and public spat between Tau and the club.
Briefly.co.za gathered that Mamelodi Sundowns denied that it was trying to block Tau’s move to Europe and was actually committed to ensuring the player receives the best possible deal and moves to a top league in Europe.
Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane told Sport24.com that he wanted Tau to move to Europe and had already started preparing for life without his star striker. He confirmed that negotiations between Sundowns and other clubs were ongoing.
Brighton has made it clear that this is their final offer and the club also stressed that it wanted to conclude the deal as soon as possible. Sources close to Brighton’s management team said the club had grown frustrated with Mamelodi Sundowns apparent lack of urgency.
According to reports Mamelodi Sundowns were given 24 hours to accept the deal.
Tau has 12-months remaining on his current contract and has made it clear that he would move to Brighton at the end of that term if his club did not release him.
If that scenario came to pass Mamelodi Sundowns will not make a cent out of their star player.
Mamelodi have gained a reputation over recent years of blocking players from moving, despite publicly backing these proposed moves.
Keegan Dolly had to get legal help to ease his move to Montpellier and Siboniso Gaxa, like Tau, was promised he could leave for Belgium but had to resort to begging and pleading before the move finally materialised.
