Chiwaka has been hailed a hero after he helped save several lives during a fire in their flats. According to the 27-year-old dad, when he saw all the smoke he knew he had to get his wife, Fiona, and their two-year-old daughter to safety.

However, there were only two keys to the security gate, and the man who had them was not there. So, he broke a window and leaped to a nearby shack, where he stood to help his daughter and wife out of the burning building.

When his family was safe, Chiwaka went back to help more people and Briefly.co.za learned he saved at least 10 more residents.

“Everyone was in panic mode. I went back into the flat and helped to get all the people out through my room”, he said.

The hero added their neighbours woke up and then everyone worked together by making a chain, where water was passed on so that the fire could be put out.

According to the Daily Sun, the fire was started by a drunk man who also lived in the flats. He reportedly knocked on all the doors to warn people, but Chiwaka’s 23-year-old wife said it was not the first time he would do that, so no one believed him.

However, when Chiwaka, who hails from Zimbabwe, opened his door all he could see was smoke, so he knew the drunk man was not crying wolf.

Luckily no one got seriously injured, one woman dislocated her leg while panicking and the man who started the fire had minor injuries.

Milnerton Fire and Rescue Commander Mark Smith has since met with Chiwaka to thank him for his courageous act, which helped prevents deaths.
