EFF leader Julius Malema says Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan is "the real president of South Africa".

Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema said on Wednesday that "the real president of South Africa" is actually Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan.

Malema was speaking at the EFF's head office in Braamfontein about a variety of issues when he made this claim. He stated that Gordhan enjoys more power than Cyril Ramaphosa.

Malema has a troubled relationship with Gordhan since his days as the leader of the ANC Youth League. He is also allegedly bitter with Gordhan over tax-related problems.

According to a report by The Sowetan, the EFF leader feels that he was targeted by Gordhan when he disagreed with Zuma's appointment of him as finance minister.

I became corrupt the day I challenged Pravin's appointment, when I said to Zuma; 'Why do you keep on appointing minorities into the economic cluster to the exclusion of the black Africans?'

Malema admits he had problems with SARS but feels Gordhan went after him because of his questions to Zuma.

The EFF leader used as an example of Gordhan's power the fact that he filed an affidavit against the suspended SA Revenue Service Commissioner Tom Moyane.

Malema also described Gordhan as a gangster, according to reports by the eNCA.

Furthermore, Malema said Gordhan makes 'illegal' appointments to the boards of state-owned entities without following procedures.

He does as he wishes, we cannot allow that. We've never elected Pravin and he will never be an official president of South Africa.

President Ramaphosa was called "useless" by Malema for letting Gordhan have so much power.

Khusela Diko, the president's spokeswoman, did not want to give any comments on Malema's remarks.

Gordhan did not respond either.
