In 2016, Liza van Deventer walked out of her audition for the character of Chef Candice on SABC 1’s soap-drama Skeem Saam, thinking her chances of scoring the role were very slim, only to get a call from her agent two days later to inform her that she got the part. The actress recently sat down with People magazine and told them about being part of Skeem Saam and studying overseas.

According to People, Liza studied acting in the United States to get a broader understanding of the industry. “I went to LA to go study acting and I got hands on experience while I was going to acting classes and went to a lot of auditions. I got to meet people from all over the world. You’re never bored because there’s so much to do”, said van Deventer. She also mentioned that her stay in LA was overwhelming but also a great experience all round.

Liza plays the role of Candice Erasmus, commonly known as Chef Candice, on Skeem Saam. Candice is Katlego Petersen’s girlfriend, also a graduate of Polokwane Culinary Academy. She has a huge passion for food and would ideally like to run her own restaurant.

The actress describes her character as “extremely ambitious, confident and caring but at the same time she is not afraid to speak up for herself and others.” Liza told Hello Jorburg that working on Skeem Saam has been the best learning experience of her life and she is very grateful for the opportunity.

Even though Skeem Saam shoots in Johannesburg, Liza is based in Capetown and revealed that the producers of the show are very accommodating in allowing her to travel between the two cities. She also praised her wonderful agents who help her and are very supportive.
