Thato Molamu’s recent announcement is definitely a first for South African shores. This talented gent broke the news that he, in collaboration with Gateway Media and the South African Creatives Incubator, has launched the first-ever film academy in Gauteng.

He announced the launch of his academy, The Leaders in Motion Academy, on social media.

He captioned a video clip announcing the launch with the following statement:

“An emotional day for me, today we got to break barriers by launching the first ever Township Film Academy in Gauteng. No longer will a young black child from the township with a dream to become a filmmaker struggle to learn how to create a film, no longer will they lack the entrepreneurial skills they need to own their own, sell or distribute their own content or achieve their dream. We are happy to fund our youth in this programme and make dreams come through.”

ZAlebs reported how, in an interview with Trending ZA, he spoke about this launch and his vision for the academy.

“…what the school is about is obviously for the township, by the township...our slogan is normalizing access. We’re now giving an opportunity to the black child, we’re now giving them access to things that were said to be impossible, access to cameras, editing suits, space, boardroom - if they want to have meetings, giving them access to computers, if they want to do research, Wi-Fi…we also give you entrepreneurial skills...we’re also building people who can create their own content and own it.”

It is clear that Thato has a heart for young people, especially ones who dream of succeeding in something. In an article earlier this year, Briefly.co.za reported how Thato Molamu wants to help young entrepreneurs succeed.

In the article, Thato said he owns Gateway Media Pty Ltd, whose main focus is media solutions and customer experience. In addition, he established the Thato Molamu Foundation. He explained its mission as:

“[It's] a mindset change platform using Creative Arts to build self-confidence in young people in the townships to become economic players and entrepreneurs. The principle stems from the concept that with information, you can change the world.”
