A robber learned the hard way that crime does not pay when he his escape plan came crashing down.
An unidentified man and his accomplice attempted to rob a Pep Cell store at Shoprite Centre in Philippi on Monday, and they nearly succeeded was it not for a weak ceiling board.
The Daily Voice reported the robber and his side-kick broke the lock of the roller shutters and then continued to enter the store, where they smashed the display cases with a brick.
Their master plan was then to escape through the roof, but police had already been called, which resulted in one of the robbers hiding out in the ceiling for an hour and a half.
However, Briefly.co.za learned the robber’s weigh along with all the goods he tried to steal was getting to heavy for the ceiling, so it caved in.
The looter’s crash landing made for an easy arrest and police officers took him into custody shortly after he hit the floor.
“The roof could no longer carry his weight. When he hit the ground, he was cuffed.”, Mariki Schwiebus of Pep Communications said.
According to Schwiebus, they were still busy assessing the damage and the store will be closed while they’re busy doing so.
