Mamelodi Sundowns have agreed to release star striker Percy Tau to English Premier League side Brighton Hove and Albion for a record-breaking transfer fee of around R50 million.
Mamelodi Sundowns president Dr Patrice Motsepe has instructed officials at the club to stop dragging their feet and finalise the deal between Brighton and Tau.
The club released the following statement via its official website on Monday evening:
Briefly.co.za gathered that Motsepe gave his blessing for the deal to proceed after Tau and his agent met with him. During the meeting, Tau is believed to have apologised for absconding from club activities and for making certain public statements.
Tau and the club’s management have been embroiled in an ugly public spat in recent weeks during which time the star striker accused the club of trying to block his move to Europe.
The club vehemently denied the allegation and repeatedly stated that it was committed to Tau’s move to Europe and finding the best possible deal for the player while also ensuring he went to one of the top leagues in Europe.
Motsepe has grown weary of the potential damage the public spat could have on the club and instructed the club to finalise the deal with Brighton which sport24.com reported is worth around R50 million and could net the club as much as R65 million after add-ons and bonuses are applied.
Brighton made the record-breaking offer last week and made it clear that if Mamelodi Sundowns did not accept the offer it would walk away from Tau.
The deal obliterates the previous transfer record for a South African player which was set when former Ajax Cape Town star Thulani Serero moved to Ajax Amsterdam for R24.5 million.
South African football pundits believe Tau stands a great chance of making an immediate impact in the English Premier League if and when he does take the field for Brighton.
