US-based South African actress, Phumzile Sitole, joins Netflix original series Orange Is The New Black.
According to tweets by local entertainment commentator, Phil Mphela, Sitole has been cast to play the role of Antoinetta 'Akers' Kerson. She will appear in 9 episodes of the series' sixth season premiering on July 27.
Phumzile confirmed the news with a tweet saying, “Meet Akers on July 27!!! Kusazobalit”.
From the creator of Weeds, OITNB is about a character named Piper Chapman who is a public relations executive with a career and a fiancé when her past suddenly catches up to her. In her mid-30s she is sentenced to spend time in a minimum-security women's prison in Connecticut for her association with a drug runner, 10 years earlier. Forced to trade power suits for prison orange, Chapman makes her way through the corrections system and adjusts to life behind bars, making friends with the many eccentric, unusual and unexpected people she meets.
Phumzile is a graduate from Columbia University in New York. She played the assistant to Adrian Boseman (Delroy Lindo) in American legal and political drama The Good Fight. Briefly.co.za gathered that the actress also acted alongside Olivia Washington in Shakti Bhagchandani’s short film, Lostfound, which was accepted into Sundance Festival in 2017. She was also part of Athi-Patra Ruga’s commissioned performance, Over the Rainbow, which took place at the annual Performa Gala.
Speaking about auditions in her interview with 10and5.com, Phumzile says, “Every time I sit at TV auditions, I try and talk myself out of the disappointment – this is not your avenue, you are too big, too loud, too theatre.”
