Leandro's friend, Dwayne Saunders, took to Facebook to praise his brave contribution. He said Leandro and his team worked in a dangerous chamber 2.5km inside one of the caves.
During the three-day rescue effort, they had to pass on stretchers carrying the boys to the next chamber and ultimately to safety.
Leandro's sister, Lucia, also commended her brother for risking his life to help rescue the boys. She hailed him as an "absolute legend."
