- Yvonne bought land in Rustenburg
- It's still vacant and has no municipal services
- However, she received an R18,000 bill from the municipality
A woman was surprised to receive a huge R18,000 municipal bill despite her land being vacant and having no municipal services.
Yvonne Mfana bought the land in Safari Gardens, North West province, from the Rustenburg Municipality in 2016, Briefly.co.za learned.
It has no houses or water and electricity installations. However, the municipality sent her the bill in February and asked her to pay by April, according to Daily Sun.
I have not slept since I got that shocking bill. I don’t understand why I should pay for services I don’t have.
She wondered how much she would end up paying once she develops the land and starts receiving services.
Yvonne said she has approached municipal officials about the issue but has not received an explanation so far.
Two more residents, Mamela Mpangeva and Wendy Shiba, also told Daily Sun that they were similarly slapped with huge bills for their undeveloped land.
A spokesperson from the municipality, Andrew Seome, pledged further investigations into the matter.
