Kaizer Chiefs have appointed Italian Giovanni Solinas as its new head coach. The announcement was made by the club’s enigmatic chairman Kaizer Motaung at 13:30 on Friday afternoon.

Solinas is not a complete unknown in the South African footballing fraternity, he had a relatively successful stint with Free State Stars which started in December 2015 and eventually ended in January 2017.

During his time at Free State Stars he helped turn things around at the club and led the team to a Nedbank Cup semi-final and 12th of the PSL log in 2015/16.

Briefly.co.za gathered that Solinas has spent the majority of his coaching career in North-Africa and the Middle-East.

After quitting his role at Free State Stars he returned to Al-Faisaly FC. He originally joined the team in 2013 and helped save the club from being relegated to the second division. Solinas helped the club qualify for the Gulf Cup for clubs.

He also spent time at ES Setif and led the club to national and continental successes.

He has a history and a pedigree of turning struggling sides around and either taking them to league victory or getting them very close. Solinas also brings vast stores of African experience, something which Kaizer Chiefs will undoubtedly value should the team qualify for the CAF Champions League.

His appointment ends weeks of speculation about Stuart Baxter’s future at Bafana Bafana. The former Kaizer Chiefs coach had been heavily linked with a return to the Naturena this season.

Kaizer Chiefs supporters will hope Solinas can return the club to glory and will be desperate for the team to win silverware this season and avoid a fourth straight year without any trophy’s.
