- Members of St Francis Anglican Church in Rockville, Soweto, are fed up with their priest
- They described the church leader as a scary dictator
- According to one of the members, the priest only cares about making money
On Sunday, the St Francis Anglican Church congregation protested the removal of their priest and they handed in a memorandum to the church leaders, the Daily Voice reported.
Mpho Molefe, a 56-year-old woman who had been with the church for nearly two decades, said she was tired of the way he ran the church.
Molefe said the church turned into a money-making scheme since the priest only cares about making money. She added he only cares about rich people because they can give him more cash.
According to Molefe, the priest’s greediness reached the point where he refused to baptize children if the parents can not pay R750.
“Parents used to pay a monthly pledge and R200 for baptism. He is now using it to make money. He tells us to go house to house looking for children who are not baptised and bring them to the church.”
One of the church’s council members, Bibi Madeba, said a lot of people kept quiet because they’re afraid of the priest.
Briefly.co.za learned Madeba added his term ended in June but he is still acting as though he was in charge.
“What kind of priest disrespects elders and doesn’t visit the sick?” the council member asked.
Archdeacon Kenneth Xinwa said they were aware of the complaints and have received the congregation’s memorandum, however they have certain rules to follow before a decision can be made.
