- Nelson Mandela would have turned 100 on 18 July
- Gogo Nowayilesi turned 100 on 7 July
- She is proud to have her 100th birthday in the same month and year as Mandela
A proud gogo from Khayelitsha in Cape Town is celebrating her 100th birthday in the same month and year as the late Nelson Mandela.
South Africa and the world are marking the centenary of Madiba's birth on 18 July, 2018.
For gogo Nowayilesi Cila, this makes her centenary even more special. She turned 100 years old on 7 July, Briefly.co.za learned.
Speaking to Daily Sun, Nowaylesi shared how she considers Madiba a hero:
I love Nelson Mandela, even though he is no more. He played a huge role in making sure that this country got its freedom.
She also had a special wish as a way of paying tribute to Mandela:
When I die I want to be buried in a cloth that has Mandela’s face on my coffin so I can rest in peace. I wish Madiba was still alive so we could celebrate our birthday month together.
Gogo Nowayilesi said she had a total of 11 children, although only four are still alive. However, her brood boasts over 50 grandchildren and 70 great-grandchildren.
She is still strong and healthy save for a few health issues, including arthritis and high blood pressure.
The happy gogo lives with her 66-year-old daughter Buyelwa and some of her grandchildren.
