- Kheris endured bullying in school because of her dark skin
- This inspired her to start a clothing line, Flexin' in My Complexion
- Through it, she inspires others to be proud of how they look
An 11-year-old girl in Los Angeles, US, turned the bullying she endured for her dark skin into an inspiration to build a business empire.
Kheris Rogers's schoolmates often shunned her and made fun of her dark complexion, Briefly.co.za gathered.
In a video feature on CNBC, Kheris' sister, Taylor Pollard, said the little girl even took longer in the bathtub sometimes because she thought it would make her lighter-skinned.
In a bid to encourage Kheris to be proud of her complexion, Taylor shared her photos on Twitter in March 2017 with the hashtag #FlexinInHerComplexion.
The tweet went viral and inspired the two sisters to start their clothing line, Flexin' In My Complexion. Their aim was to inspire other kids to feel comfortable in their skin.
The brand has since grown significantly, raking in over $100,000 (R1.3million) in revenue from its first year. Amazingly, Kheris was just 10 years old when she started it.
Various celebrities, including actress Lupita Nyong'o, rapper Snoop Dogg and singer Alicia Keys, have proudly endorsed Kheris' label.
Kheris said she hopes her story would help others to similarly develop their confidence no matter how they look. She explained:
People tell them they can't do that because they're black, or you can't do this because of what you look like. No, if you have a dream, you should just go for it.
