Orlando Pirates assistant coach Rhulani Mokwena said he was pleased by the team’s performances during their historic pre-season training camp in Zambia. The Soweto giants returned to South Africa on Thursday.

Orlando Pirates embarked on their first ever pre-season training camp outside of South Africa recently. The technical team decided it would be good preparation for the players ahead of their CAF Champions League campaign.

Mokwena said the camp gave the entire technical team the opportunity to properly assess almost all aspects of the team and the individual players. Mokwena said he and head coach Milutin Sredojevic were able to try out various combinations and implement certain plans.

Briefly.co.za gathered that Pirates played four friendly matches during their trip to Zambia including one against Congolese powerhouse TP Mazembe. The team won two matches and drew two matches and overall impressed the coaching staff.

Mokwena told Kickoff.co.za that he was especially pleased by the player’s ability to implement and execute plans and instructions and the positive attitude which is palpable in the locker room.

Mokwena said it was both a relief and a pleasure to see how the technical team’s plan had transferred from a theory on a blackboard to on-field performances.

Supporters and pundits alike are expecting big things from the Mayfair-based squad in the upcoming season after they finished second in the PSL last season.

The hope is that the team will be able to go one better this year and bring home some much-wanted silverware for the first time in four years.
