- Lerato opened up about his struggles to stardom and living p to his dad
- He felt that he was completely failing at times, but he kept pushing on
- At times, he did not even have enough money to provide for his little family
Lerato Makhetha, recently joined the cast of Isidingo, was at one stage not getting any gigs and felt like a failure to his young family.
The son of veteran actor Jerry Mofokeng, plays the part of Ntando Sibeko. His music career is growing as fast as his acting career.
Makhetha said it has taken him 15 years to break through into the industry, reported Times Live.
In the beginning of his career, Makhetha only starred in small productions which required him to go back to the corporate world in order to make enough money to survive.
Briefly.co.za learnt that, four years ago, Makhetha experienced a low in his life thinking the end of his profession was near.
He commented that there were times that he was down and the band he was playing in just couldn’t get a break. He and his family were evicted from the home they were staying in. At that stage he was going for auditions but nothing was coming his way.
The money he was earning playing gigs was not sufficient to sustain a living for him and his family.
It was at that moment that, as a husband and a provider he lost hope falling into his lowest point. He even had trouble looking at himself in the mirror.
Makhetha’s dad is proud of his son, but he never encouraged him to take the path of acting, as he thought it might just be a phase his son was going through.
He said that the understood where his dad was coming from and never held it against him. Makhetha knew his dad wanted him to master a profession and not be a jack of all trades.
His dad was set of him focusing on his music and not have the acting industry distract him from his dream. Makhetha appreciates his father’s input as he has not been able to prove he can make it on his own and has not given up on his dream!
After almost a month starring in the soapie, Lerato said that he understands the view of some people being offended him taking over the role from Loyiso MacDonald, and viewers wanting ‘their Ntando’ back.
At the age of 31, Lerato has matured and learnt not to take things like this personally.
