Mamelodi Sundowns has a three week head start on Premier Soccer League (PSL) preparations as compared to its rivals that is according to the club’s fullback Thapelo Morena. He believes Mamelodi taking part in the CAF Champions League hands the defending champions a distinct advantage going into the new season.

Morena said while PSL teams will be starting their first week when the new season starts Sundowns will, because of its participation in the group stages of the African tournament, be in its third week.

Morena said preparations and participation in the Champions League means Mamelodi Sundowns players are much better prepared and already accustomed to playing together.

Briefly.co.za gathered that Morena added that the African league was a super competitive competition which provided players with challenges they would not necessarily face in the PSL but they could use that experience in the PSL.

News24.com reported that Morena added that it also allowed the players and the team to build some momentum heading into a season rather than starting from zero.

Morena said he hoped to help Mamelodi defend their PSL title and was keen to improve his own game and his goal was to deliver an overall improved performance.

Mamelodi Sundowns are currently anchored at the bottom of Group C of the CAF Champions League competition. The club suffered a shock defeat to AS Port-Togo last week and will be looking to make amends on the return leg which is set to take place on Friday.

Sundowns will have to hope for a positive result in all of their remaining matches and will have to rely on some other results going their way if they hope to progress in the competition.

Earlier the PSL confirmed that Mamelodi Sundowns will host Kaizer Chiefs at Loftus Versfeld in the opening match of the 2018/19 ABSA Premier League on Saturday 4 August. The titanic match is set to start at 15:00.
