Orlando Pirates have suffered a devastating double injury blow in the lead-up to the new Premier League Season (PSL). The club has confirmed its midfielders Thabo Qalinge and Thembinkosi Lorch will not be available for the opening match of the season.
Both players sustained injuries during the club’s pre-season training camp in the Western Cape. Qalinge has been ruled out of the opening match with a muscle abductor strain which he sustained during a friendly match against Stellenbosch FC.
Lorch suffered a blow to the knee during a friendly game against Cape Town City which took place this past weekend. Lorch has not been ruled out of the opening match of the season but expectations are that the club will rest him to allow for full recovery.
Briefly.co.za gathered that Pirates will face Highlands Park in their opening match of the 2018/19 PSL season.
The club has a long season ahead of it as it embarks on an African campaign which can as has been proven in the past become extremely taxing on the playing staff and the technical team is unlikely to risk key players this early in the season.
Kickoff.co.za reported that Orlando Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic has asked the club’s supporters to remain patient in the build-up to the new season.
Pirates fans have been unable to see their team play in any of their pre-season friendlies because the matches have all taken place behind closed doors.
Sredojevic said preparations for the new season were going as well as he could have hoped for.
Orlando Pirates are expected to mount a serious challenge for top honours in the PSL this season after finishing second last season.
Sredojevic has been credited with turning the team around after it finished in 12th place in the 2016/17 season.
