What has former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe been up to? The former leader has been quiet since his empire came crashing down in November last year, but the Citizen has pieces together some irregular sightings of the former leader.
He was seen – twice – in Singapore on medical visits. He is reportedly suffering from prostate cancer, high blood pressure and cataracts. According to Zimbabwean government, overseas travel is part of his retirement package.
Remaining rather quiet, the former president has only spoken out once since his ousting from government and that was in a press interview in March when he referred to his his ousting as a “coup d’etat” and dismissed the generals’ claim that they intervened only to target enemies around him.
“We must undo this disgrace which we have imposed on ourselves… Zimbabwe doesn’t deserve it,” he said, adding he did not want to return to power.
For the first time his birthday was celebrate quietly, with no fan-fare and with only close family and friends at his “blue roof” home in Harare. That was in February this year.
On Monday, Zimbabweans will head to the voting booth in the highly-anticipated presidential election. The election will be the first time Robert Mugabe is not a candidate for president.
