- Hot 91.9 FM highlighted her story
- Listeners and the radio station teamed up to buy her a car to help her get to work
Listeners of a Johannesburg radio station teamed up recently to buy a car for a mother who lost her daughter during a robbery.
Hot 91.9 FM highlighted Audrey Barrett's predicament soon after it happened in early July, Briefly.co.za learned.
According to a post on the station's Facebook page, the robbers shot and killed Audrey's daughter, but took only two cellphones.
Audrey was unemployed for a while and only found a job recently as a yard manager at Build-It in Honeydew, Johannesburg.
However, her biggest challenge was transport to and from work. She also has an adult son who is physically and mentally challenged.
The radio station, listeners, and other well-wishers therefore rallied to get her a second-hand car. Audrey will also get fuel and insurance assistance for six months.
In its post, Hot 91.9 concluded:
This month [July] has demonstrated to us, beyond a shadow of a doubt the love and caring of the community in which we live. Thank you.
