A video has gone viral on social media, which showed Economic Freedom Fighters' leader, Julius Malema, appearing to discharge a heavy weapon during the party's fifth birthday celebrations over the weekend.

The video shows Juju taking what appears to be an assault rifle, then discharging it in the air while the party's members and supporters sang, News24 reported.

The footage has since caused outrage on social media, with South Africans condemning the EFF leader's actions as irresponsible and unsafe.

Briefly.co.za gathered VF Plus Gauteng Youth Leader Jean Kriek was one of the South Africans who shared the video on social media.

"South Africa | @EFFSouthAfrica's leader @Julius_S_Malema firing an AK47! What will the @SAPoliceService do about this? THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! Are we now allowed to fire weapons in stadiums, where did those projectiles land? RETWEET & MAKE THIS VIDEO VIRAL! #ArrestMalema!!!" he captioned the video.

Kriek is not the only one who felt Juju should face legal action. A report by IOL indicated the ANC Youth League wanted Malema to stand accountable for his "unsafe and irresponsible" actions.

"We, therefore, call upon law enforcement agencies to investigate this conduct. Even for a morally compromised fellow like Julius Malema, such conduct is unacceptable and must be condemned," the ANC faction said in a statement on 1 August.

However, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, aka the People's Bae, defended his party's leader, saying the weapon was in fact a fake, with fake bullet. He added it was all part of their celebrations
