- Zikhona opened up about how HIV ended her relationship
- Her boyfriend left her soon after learning she was HIV positive
- They had dated for more than a year
A Cape Town-based HIV activist has opened up about how her HIV-positive status ended her relationship.
In a series of Twitter posts, 26-year-old Zikhona Dingile said her boyfriend of one year decided to leave her upon learning of her status.
She's therefore not ready for a new relationship because she is wary of being rejected and stigmatised, Briefly.co.za learned.
Zikhona accompanied her posts with screenshots of her WhatsApp and Facebook chats with her ex-boyfriend.
In the chats, her ex-boyfriend said he was leaving her because he was afraid of being judged for being with a HIV-positive woman.
Zikhona explained that with careful management of HIV viral loads, discordant couples can still be together and have HIV-negative babies. However, her ex was still reluctant.
The brave activist's Twitter followers sent her supportive messages and urged her to remain strong. See some of their reactions below.
Briefly.co.za previously reported how Zikhona is on a mission to tackle HIV stigma and discrimination through her social media campaign.
