HIV activist opens up about relationship stigmas and rejection

A Cape Town-based HIV activist has opened up about how her HIV-positive status ended her relationship.

In a series of Twitter posts, 26-year-old Zikhona Dingile said her boyfriend of one year decided to leave her upon learning of her status.

She's therefore not ready for a new relationship because she is wary of being rejected and stigmatised, learned.

Zikhona accompanied her posts with screenshots of her WhatsApp and Facebook chats with her ex-boyfriend.

In the chats, her ex-boyfriend said he was leaving her because he was afraid of being judged for being with a HIV-positive woman.

Zikhona explained that with careful management of HIV viral loads, discordant couples can still be together and have HIV-negative babies. However, her ex was still reluctant.

The brave activist's Twitter followers sent her supportive messages and urged her to remain strong. See some of their reactions below.
