Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho returned to the United Kingdom from the club’s pre-season tour of the US with armed cops on guard as the Portuguese was ushered into a waiting car.

According to a UK Mirror report, the Red Devils boss is unhappy that the Old Trafford side which produced the Busby Babes and the Class of 92 are now struggling to live up to its past reputation as a producer of young talents

The Portuguese manager took a host of youngsters on Manchester United’s five-game US tour as some of the established stars were either injured or are on extended World Cup vacations.

At the last count, Mourinho went on tour with the following seven rookies that include Mason Greenwood, 16, James Garner and Angel Gomes, 17, Tahith Chong, 18, and RoShaun Williams, Ethan Hamilton and Joshua Bohui, all 19.

During the matches, all enjoyed snippets of first-team action on tour mostly as substitutes but Mourinho still battled to pick a side fit enough for the pre-season hostilities.

However, after the Premier League giants concluded their US tour with a 2-1 win over Real Madrid in Miami, Mourinho stressed that the quality on parade was “not good” enough following the relegation of the Under-23s from Premier League Two last term.

“We had just a few players here, lots of kids,” said Mourinho.

“Our kids are really, really young because the team of all the ones the Under-23 was relegated, the team went to the second division.

“So the quality was not good. So we prefer to bring kids, and we had on the pitch today a couple of kids who were 17-years-old.”

Interestingly, Mourinho was blunt after admitting days earlier that many of the young players he went on tour with will be sent out on loan next season.

“This is not our team,” said Mourinho, in the wake of United's 4-1 defeat by Liverpool.

“We started the game with almost half of the players who are not even going to belong to our squad on August 9. They will not be here.

“So this is not our squad. This is not even half my squad or 30 per cent of it. So don’t look to this.”

On the other hand, the Red Devils dropped into second tier of Premier League Two despite having finished as champions in three of the last five seasons.

The Reds, managed by Ricky Sbragia, emerged champions in the first year of the competition's new format, after it was replaced the Premier Reserve League in 2012-13 campaign.

Meanwhile, previously had reported that Manchester United reserve team have been condemned to an embarrassing relegation from the top flight of the Premier League 2 division.

Derby's win against West Ham sealed the Red Devils' U-23's fate as it has been confirmed they will not play top flight next season.

United’s B Team are five points off safety with just one game left to play in Division One of the Premier League 2.
