Nigerian star Alex Iwobi emerged match hero as EPL giants Arsenal defeated Chelsea 6-5 in post-match penalties in a thrilling preseason friendly clash played on Wednesday, August 1 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
The match was part of the International Champions Cup and presented the first real tests for the two clubs' new managers who took over in the summer.
Arsenal youngster Matteo Guendouzi and Chelsea's Callum Hudsoin-Odoi were all handed a start during the tie even as they hope for more playing time when the new season begins.
The Gunners lost star midfielder Aaron Ramsey in the warm-up ahead of this one and was scheduled to start in Dublin before he pulled up and was been replaced by Emile Smith Rowe.
Arsenal, who have been brilliant throughout the preseason campaign failed to replicate their fine form during the Wednesday clash as Mkhitaryan, Ozil and Aubameyang all firing blanks.
Rudiger opened the scoring for the Blues within just five minutes of game play with the German defender firing his header into the bottom corner after excellent work from Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Chelsea had a prime opportunity of cementing their lead in the 15th minute but Alvaro Morata squandered the chance after failing to convert from the penalty spot when Hudson-Odoi was brought down in the box by Hector Bellerin.
The second half of the match was not full of action as the Blues looked set for a clear win.
However, Arsenal equalised matters at the death via Lacazette who netted from Nelson’s cross to force the game into penalties which they went on to win.
Earlier, NAIJ.com had reported how Jean Seri who currently plays for French club OGC Nice reportedly emerged as a summer transfer target for Arsenal who are ready to submit a bid of £35 million.
The 26-year-old midfielder was in good form last season for his club in France, and could become another signing for Arsenal coach Unai Emery at the Emirates stadium.
