- A video showing EFF leader Julius Malema firing off what looks like an assault rifle went viral recently
- The EFF claims it is not serious because the rifle only shot blanks
- However, firearm experts say Malema was definitely shooting off live ammo
Julius Malema caused quite a stir when he was filmed firing what appears to be an assault rifle at his party's birthday celebrations.
The video went viral and landed Julius in hot water when South Africans took to social media to condemn his irresponsible actions, as reported on by Briefly.co.za.
While Julius wasn't available for comment over his actions, the EFF stated that their leader was firing blanks.
However, TimesLIVE reports that an expert who has seen the video concluded that Julius was, in fact, firing live rounds.
Johan Lourens, firearm trainer and expert, stated that it is clear from the video that the firearm wasn't fitted with a muzzle stopper as would be the case when firing blanks.
Lourens added that the firearm belonged to Julius' bodyguard and he would not logically carry a firearm that shoots blanks if he was expected to protect a life.
In related news, BLF leader Andile Mngxitama has announced his organisation would lay criminal charges against the man who handed Julius an assault rifle over the weekend
Briefly.co.za reported that Mngxitama said the white man had been involved in a plot to get Julius to kill black people on his behalf.
