Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana has opened up about the specific challenges a match against Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants Kaizer Chiefs brings. Kekana said playing against the Amakhosi always came with a ‘scary feeling.’
Kekana said despite this he and his teammates always looked forward to playing against the Soweto giants because each match Kaizer Chiefs played was special.
The defending champions will face a somewhat rebooted Kaizer Chiefs team at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon in the opening match of the 2018/19 PSL season.
Briefly.co.za gathered that Kekana said the upcoming match was a daunting prospect but he and the other players in the Sundowns squad were actually looking forward to the game and hoped to be able to put all of their training and preparation work into practice.
Kekana told Kickoff.co.za that it hurt a little to have so many former Mamelodi Sundowns players currently playing for Kaizer Chiefs. He added that it was strange playing against former teammates.
Kekana said he was still friends with some of the players who had left Chloorkop for the Naturena and this made playing against them difficult.
He said he still spoke too many of the players who had left and would have to stop himself from hugging them after the match.
Kekana said he would have to flip a switch in his mind and just be a professional during the match.
Based on pre-season form and activity Mamelodi are heavy favourites to win the match on Saturday. The Brazilians beat Chiefs in the Shell Helix Cup two weeks ago.
Kaizer Chiefs have had anything but an ideal pre-season and appear to be underprepared for the new season but the team will take solace from their results against Sundowns last season in which they won one match and drew the other.
