- EFF deputy leader Floyd Shivambu has called for the name of Mzansi to be changed from South Africa to Azania
- He said the name South Africa had colonial associations and should be changed to reflect the changes in the country
- Shivambu said Azania should be used which research has shown is the historic name for the southern tip of Africa
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) deputy leader Floyd Shivambu has called for the name of Mzansi to be changed from South Africa to Azania. Shivambu said the name South African still carries with it a certain amount of colonial association and should be changed to reflect changes which have occurred in the country since 1994.
Shivambu suggested that the country should be renamed to Azania, a name which he claims research has shown was historically used for to describe much of the lands which South Africa now occupy.
According to Shivambu, research by Professor Es’kiah Mphahlele has proven that Azania carries historic rather than purely geographic implications and was used by locals long before settlers came to these lands.
Briefly.co.za gathered that the PAC made a similar call in 2017. PAC general secretary Narius Moloto said at the time his party would bring the proposed name change up for debate in Parliament.
Moloto also referenced the research by professor Mphahlele and said Azania was an Arabic word which had been used to describe the region rather than a specific country.
Citizen.co.za reported that Shivambu also brought up the prickly topic of general name changes in South Africa. He said the EFF would push to have anything which was still named after apartheid-era leaders or had colonial ties changed.
He said the EFF was working on changing anything which could still be linked with the racial abuses of the past.
Shivambu said right at the top of the EFF’s list was having Cape Town International Airport changed to honour the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
Shivambu said the EFF would raise the issue in Parliament and would push for the airport to be renamed to Mama Winnie Nomzamo Madikizela-Mandela.
The proposal is likely to be met with fierce opposition from those in the Western Cape who have proposed the airport should be renamed after someone who had historical ties with the province.
The first hearings into the proposed name change descended into chaos.
