- She encourages actresses to work hard and be patient until their big break
Best known for her role as Pretty on ‘Skeem Saam’, Lerato Marabe has spoken out about sexual harassment within the entertainment industry and is encouraging more stars to follow suit.
The star also said that in many instances, jobs are offered to actresses but on one condition, that they sleep with the one who will give them the job.
Lerato stated that people are now more aware of what takes place and are no longer shocked by it. TimesLIVE reported that she went on to say that this type of harassment has become a standard practice in the industry and many women often joke about it with one another.
She strongly believes that there are other ways to make a name for herself in the industry without having to use her body to advance her career.
She encourages more of her colleagues to do the same.
Her advice to young actresses who are at the start of their careers to be patient and work hard. This way they earn their fame, and no one will hold any power over them.
While Lerato has not fallen victim to sexual harassment, she knows of people who have.
Lerato visited a school in Katlehong to speak to young girls about empowerment as part of Women’s month.
During her visit, she found that many of the children she spoke to were able to relate to ‘Skeem Saam’ as the show deals with many of the issues that they face on a regular basis.
Briefly.co.za learned that Lerato was recently slapped by a fan who had approached her during an outing with her friends. She said after the incident that being in the spotlight does have a downside.
Lerato understood that the fan's reaction was mainly aimed at her character on 'Skeem Saam' and nothing personal. The actress, however, was still shaken by the incident and promptly phoned her mother for comfort shortly after it happened.
