The African National Congress received backlash following a tweet it made on Thursday, which labelled all white people murderers.
In a post that has since been deleted, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s party referred to all white people as ‘murderers’- a statement that sparked outrage on Twitter.
The Citizen reported the tweet read: “The biggest mistake we are making is to consult murderers. White people are 9% of the population, they own 79% of land. They never came and consulted us for the land. If they want us to forgive them now, then let us share the land, the mineral resources.”
In an attempt to defend itself, the ANC deleted the tweet and claimed they were quoting someone from the general public.
However, Briefly.co.za learned social media users and lawyers added the ruling party could still get trouble for the tweet, which many have dubbed racist, because they did not use quotation marks.
Peter Terry, who goes by the Twitter handle @PeterTerry3, wrote: “Tweeting 101: if it's not a retweet, or in quotes, or directly attributed to a third party, it's YOUR tweet.”
Social media user @Brencro1 added, "Why post something so inflamatory and divisive under your party's name? And why not retweet showing it's origin? If any other party or person said this, there would be outrage for days. Shame on you. Btw, it's all over social media now and making ANC look terrible."
