Pearl Thusi is one of South Africa’s most influential female celebs. Mzansi is swoon over the actress come TV personality for all that she is.
She recently gave a moving speech at the Mercury/Unilever Women’s Day Lunch which was held in Durban KZN at the International Convention Centre (ICC), reported OkMzansi.
Her speech brought a lump to many people’s throats. She opened up about how she experienced abuse as a child.
Pear stated that she lived with an abusive father who physically abused her mother. She witnessed the abuse on many occasions and said that it has had a lasting effect on her.
Briefly.co.za learnt that growing up in a household where abuse is ‘normal’, makes one question a lot. Pear highlighted that she loved her father despite the abuse and she wishes that it never became ‘a normalised behaviour’.
Pearl opened up about how witnessing her father abusing her mother as a child impacted her life as an adult.
Even though her father did not abuse her, it did not make him a good man. He was an awful husband and caused a lot of suffering to her dear mom.
She further stated that she has no doubt in her father’s love for her, but he was no example of a man. Pearl said that she had begged her mother to leave many times, but she ended up dying before she ever did.
Abuse is a real and rife thing. People, especially women, need to stand up against it. It is not normal, nor is it ok under any circumstance.
