A young woman from Mbombela, Mpumalanga, has shared how she finally overcame abuse at the hands of her ex-husband.

Writing on Facebook, Lerato Masilela said she spent almost 15 years in a broken marriage with a serial cheater and abuser.

During that time, her ex-husband allegedly abused her physically, emotionally, financially, and sexually, Briefly.co.za gathered.

Lerato said she was living in a fancy house and driving several cars a week. As a result, she was afraid of giving up that life of luxury for a long time.

She added that she has been admitted several times for depression over the past seven years. However, her ex-husband never visited her and even discouraged her children from doing so.

Fortunately, Lerato sought help from professionals and finally filed for a divorce in May 2017. It was finalised in June this year. She explained:

I thank God for giving me [the] courage and wisdom to file for divorce. If it wasn't God, I should have died [a] long time ago.
