Former Banyana Banyana Captain and striker Portia Modise has raised a social media frenzy with football supporters and in particular Orlando Pirates fans. She generated a lot of banter after her remarks aired on Thabiso Mosia Radio 2000 talk show slighted Orlando Pirates striker Thamsanqa Gabuza. Modise suggested that she is a better player than him. A former South African international and a predatory finisher in her hey days Modise threw a broadside at the former Bafana Bafana striker saying he could hardly control the ball setting twitter abuzz with her remarks.
Briefly.co.za gathered that in the talk show with Thabiso Mosia, Portia Modise claimed that, “When I watch the PSL (Absa Premiership), sometimes I think I can play here. There are some players I can replace, uGabuza ngingambeka ebentshini mina (I could easily take Gabuza’s place). UGabuza u-trap ibhola nge-shin guard (He can’t even trap the ball properly and uses the shin guards),” she said. These remarks were interpreted as disparaging by some while others took it lightheartedly. Portia Modise is a celebrated woman soccer player who made the FIFA woman player of the year shortlist in 2005 and scored over 100 international goals in a glittering but often controversy ridden career.
