Zulu Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi held a celebration for his 90th birthday at the Exhibition Centre in Durban over the weekend.
Buthelezi held the fete even though his birthday is on 27 August. In his address, he said his longevity is due to God and his family.
The veteran Inkatha Freedom Party leader said his life has been remarkable because he even survived attempts on his life, News24 reports.
I have lived far longer than is normal. More than that, God has given me tremendous good health and strength in these twilight years.
As a result, he said he has been able to serve South African people for longer than he could have anticipated. He added that he has come to know peace even as his age advances.
Briefly.co.za learned that several prominent personalities, including Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini, attended the ceremony.
Other members of the Zulu royal family were also in attendance. King Zwelithini praised Buthelezi for his wisdom and for giving others courage.
IOL.co.za also reported that Prince Buthelezi is keen to reconcile with the ANC so he can have "a peaceful and humble death."
