As a 17-year-old teen, Makhonxa was sexually assaulted by other men after they offered him a lift to his home from a party.
The 28-year-old explained he attended a Freshers Ball at Fort Hare University with his friends in 2007. However, he got separated from his pals and ended up walking to his home, alone at night.

Then a Volkswagen Citi Golf pulled up to him and asked whether he wanted a lift, little did he know the five men in the car had other plans with him.
On their way to where Makhonxa lived, they got a flat tyre and everyone stood outside while one of the men changed the flat.
It was at that moment Makhonxa felt something hit him against the back of his head and he blacked out.
When he regained consciousness, he was all alone half naked and his lower body hurt. He was taken to the hospital by a man who found him, and doctors confirmed he had been sexually assaulted.
To make matter worse, he had no idea how many of the five men sexually assaulted him.
"The sad part is, I don't know whether I was [Sexually assaulted] by one man or all of them," Makhonxa said.
However, things went from bad to worse when he tested positive for HIV following the incident. Makhonxa admitted he did not want to live any more, adding he prayed that God would take him away.
His has since found comfort in speaking about the incident and how it affected his life.
