- An inmate stabbed a Department of Correctional Services official in the Johannesburg High Court on Monday when he tried to escape
- The criminal couldn't get away and was quickly back in the custody of the officials
- The official was treated for his wounds and was deemed fit to be released from hospital
In an attempt to make his escape, an inmate stabbed a Department of Correctional Services official twice with a sharp object.
The stabbing happened in the High Court in Johannesburg. Singabakho Nxumalo of the department confirmed the attack and attempted escape, according to a report by IOL News.
Nxumalo added that the department is shocked by the incident. The stabbed official was treated in hospital and has been released.
The man was quickly caught on the court premises thanks to the fast reaction of the general public and the court security officials.
The man is serving more than 7 years for disobeying parole conditions and also faces charges of robbery and murder.
A criminal case will be lodged with the SAPS and a formal investigation has started to get all the facts about the incident.
There will also be a disciplinary hearing against the man.
