Video on social media claiming toddler's attempted kidnap was actually shoplifting

A video has taken social media by storm and South African quickly jumped to conclusion, dubbing it an attempted kidnapping in action.

However, recent reports clarified what really happened and it appeared the man used the child as a scapegoat after allegedly shoplifting.

Daily Voice confirmed the video footage, which was filmed at showed the man trying to resist capture after allegedly stealing.

According to a statement by Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, the man was taken into custody for theft and was set to appear in court earlier this week.

The footage, which many believed was a kidnapping, showed a group of men trying to capture the man, who had a child with him.

The foggy details surrounding the footage led to the misconception but Briefly.co.za learned one of the man in the group who tried to stop the alleged thief was an undercover mall cop.

Taking to social media, The N1 City mall in Cape Town responded to the video and the details surrounding it.

"Hi the video shows an alleged shoplifting suspect being apprehended by an undercover Checkers security guard. To our knowledge no child was abducted," the mall said in a comment on Facebook.
