UWC students make history to become first married couple to receive PhD together

- Sylnita and Gérard Filies made history by becoming the first couple to graduate with their PhDs from UWC

- They also celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary this year

- Now they are going to graduate at this month's graduation ceremony, together

A couple that studies together stays together- or at least that's the case of Sylnita Swartz-Filies and Gérard Filies, who are set to make history this month.

Sylnita and Filies would become the first ever couple to graduate from UWC with their PhDs together.

IOL reported the lovebirds both specialised as occupational therapists, and it made them the first in the field to graduate together.

The couple completed their first degrees in occupational therapy 28-years-ago and this year they celebrated two decades of marriage.

Before obtaining her doctorate degree, Briefly.co.za learned Sylnita went on Master's degree in child and family studies 11-years-ago.

She added she had different options of universities but chose to stay with UWC.

Sylnita developed and interest in mental health after working in the child, family and adolescent unit at Lentegeur Hospital.

Today she is employed by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). As for her hubby, Filies worked as a lecturer at UWC for the past two decades.

What makes their story even more impressive is the couple managed to balance their studies and family life.
